Parking General Information

General Information

  • All members of the Syracuse University community must register and pay the applicable fee to Parking Services for the vehicle they operate on campus.
  • A registered vehicle does not permit members of the registrant's family or friends to operate the registered vehicle in like manner if they are not qualified to do so.
  • It is the responsibility of all individuals who operate or maintain vehicles on the Syracuse University campus to be aware of the Parking Rules and Regulations and to abide by them.
  • The action of any individual operating a vehicle on campus is deemed to be conclusive evidence of his or her acceptance of, and willingness to abide, by these regulations.


Pre - Requisites for Parking Registration

The following prerequisites must be met before an individual may register with Parking Services:

  1. The applicant and the vehicle to be registered must meet all legal requirements for operation within New York State.
  2. The motor vehicle to be registered must be owned or operated by the applicant or a member of his or her immediate family.
  3. There must be no unpaid University - imposed violation charges against the applicant.
  4. A valid SU I.D. or class schedule must be shown.

Resident freshmen must petition for the possession and/or responsibility of motor vehicles prior to bringing them onto campus by writing to:
Parking and Transit Services, 621 Skytop Road, Syracuse, NY 13244.
Permission to operate a motor vehicle on campus will be granted if:

  1. The student has a physical disability that requires the student to use a motor vehicle, as attested to by the University Health Services.
  2. The student is a commuter and resides outside of the University's bus service.
  3. The student is employed off campus (which must be certified in writing by the employer on company letterhead) and the motor vehicle is required for the performance of the employee's duties.
  4. The student is participating in a University - accredited program off campus (which must be certified in writing by the appropriate Dean on department letterhead) and the motor vehicle is required for the performance of the student's duties.
  5. The student is married and living with his/her spouse.

Proper Display of Parking Permits

  1. Parking permits are issued to the individual registering the vehicle and are not transferable to any other person or vehicle.
  2. All motorcycle/moped permits must be affixed to the left - front shock so as to be clearly visible.
  3. All hanging permits must be clearly displayed facing forward from the rearview mirror or placed face - up on the dashboard on the driver's side.
  4. Registration is not valid unless a current registration decal is properly displayed on the vehicle.
  5. All outdated Syracuse University parking decals must be removed completely. Failure to comply with this regulation is considered to "Improper Display of Decal" and will result in a charge.
  6. The registrant of any vehicle is responsible for the decal on his or her vehicle. If the vehicle registered is sold or removed from campus, the decal must be removed or the registrant will be held responsible for any citations received on the vehicle.
  7. The registrant of any vehicle is responsible for notifying Parking and Transit Services of any changes that occur throughout the course of the year in the vehicle parking registration information. This includes accurate: license plate information, make, model, color, and year. The registrant must remove the old permit and bring it to Parking Services to avoid a replacement fee.    
  8. All permits remain the property of Syracuse University and may be reclaimed at any time.


Parking Permit Refunds, Cancellations and Replacements

  1. Any individual may cancel his or her parking privileges by removing the parking permit from the vehicle and returning it to Parking Services. Refunds or cancellations of deductions will be authorized only upon returning the permit to Parking Services.
  2. Refunds will be computed when you return your permit based upon the weekly rates, less any outstanding violations.
  3. No faculty and staff refunds will be given after April 30 for the academic year in which the permit is valid.
  4. There is no charge for a replacement permit when changing lot destinations if the old permit is returned.
  5. If an individual fails to remove the original permit from a registered vehicle, or if no permit is returned when changing lots, there is a replacement charge of $15.
  6. No refunds will be issued for amounts under $10.
  7. No refunds for Proximity Cards will be issued within 2 weeks after the permit expires.
  8. Proximity Cards that are reported as lost will be handled as follows:
    1. The first lost card will be subject to a replacement fee of $40.00.
    2. The second lost card will be subject to a replacement fee of $70.00.
    3. The third and any lost card thereafter will be subject to a replacement fee of $100.00.
  9. E-Z Pass Cards that are reported as lost will be handled as follows:
    1. The first lost card will be subject to a replacement fee of $50.00.
    2. The second and any lost card thereafter will be subject to a replacement fee of $100.00.
